Going into Business With Friends is Seldom a Good Idea… But What About Going into Business with Complete Strangers?

In December 2007, the small company that Winchester resident Kimberlee H. Ramirez tele-commuted for was impacted by economic conditions and responded with a major layoff. Kimberlee was faced with the daunting task of starting her own business or committing to a corporate job and a 90 minute commute each day. Shortly after that and unbeknownst to Ramiez, in Decatur, Alabama, Beth Patterson’s high-paying job at a Fortune 500 company was relocated to another state as part of a corporate buyout. As Beth’s job left town, she was faced with the choice of moving out of state or finding employment in her local area where positions in her pay range and expertise were scarce. And in Ottawa, Canada, unknown to either women, Fiona Mayer was facing a very different situation. Fiona had been given her FOURTH primary-cancer diagnosis since 9/11 (unbelievable, right?) and had “traded her voice box for her life”. Fi was facing the task of healing and finding a career that provided her with both passion and the ability to work without having to communicate verbally.

Beth, Kimberlee, and Fiona had never met. They still haven’t. And that’s where this story begins.

After serendipitously being introduced for a different purpose via the internet, in less than six months, these three women developed something much “bigger than the sum of three.” What they created was a business that develops and teaches Brilliant Marketing!™ — a hot-off-the press, novel approach to marketing a small business… one that renders traditional marketing and a traditional marketing plan obsolete! It is the missing link for “involuntary entrepreneurs” and those who own, or dream of owning, their own business.

What makes Brilliant Marketing!™ different and more impactful than other marketing information or courses is two-fold; it’s a comprehensive and exceptionally organized way for a small business to approach marketing based on the psychology of rapport, industry studies, and statistics. It is brilliantly simple, step-by-step, and breaks down the barriers that typically prevent successful marketing: overwhelming confusion and lack of knowledge, money, and time.

Although Brilliant Marketing!™ is media worthy on its own… what makes this story most appealing is the fact that the business was conceived, developed, and launched in less than six months with the principals living in different countries, having never met face to face, having never worked together before, and with communication challenges based on distance and Fi’s voice impairment.

What makes it timely is the proliferation of “involuntary entrepreneurs” due to job losses and corporate downsizing, and the need for, and desire of, many people to create additional income… now more than ever! I am pitching a story on the achievements of Beth, Kimberlee, and Fiona. It’s up-lifting, relevant, funny, touching, and “real”.

As Kimberlee expressed on the day they launched… “It was a lot like labor and giving birth. To twins. Breech. Without drugs. Alone. In the back seat of a car. In a blizzard. At night… oh you get the idea!” And I’m sure you do get the idea… they did it and it wasn’t easy but it was worth it, and it will inspire readers as to what is possible, regardless of financial limitations, job circumstances, and formidable health factors.

It’s important to note that although technology plays a part, it’s not the story. The story is about something entirely different… much less complex and much more compelling. It’s about trust, compassion, commitment for excellence, and genuine care for someone (you’ve never met). It’s also about living true to their shared family values and needs, health, time, and joy. It was taking care of business and taking care of each other along the way; unspoken and yet practiced on every level, allowing them to work together and create something of huge value for so many small business owners.

Recommended story ideas and interview topics include:

• Each individual’s unique perception and contribution to this effort; what made it possible for them to accomplish this individually and collectively… and thoughts and suggestions they can pass on to your audience

• How, from the very beginning, they were determined to create a marketing program of exceptional excellence; one that filled a gap for marketing methods that get results, educates, and genuinely helps others succeed; a story about what it took (and takes) day-to-day to keep that unwavering commitment to each other (and to those who would become their customers)

• How they strategically designed the business with the capacity for others to join them as a part of The Brilliant Marketing Group
